8th Grade Textbook - Impact: California Social Studies (Student Edition) page 55. When quoting the Mayflower Compact, the textbook censors all references to God (the primary reason Pilgrims came to America).

ReplyDeleteThe paragraph referencing John Locke should include his concept of natural rights coming from God. This will help explain the Declaration of Independence’s reference to “created equal” and “endowed by their Creator.”
The textbook states:
“In the 1690s Locke expressed the idea that people are born with certain natural rights to life, liberty, and property…”
Recommended addition:
“In the 1690s Locke expressed the idea that people are born with certain natural rights from God to life, liberty, and property…”

ReplyDeleteSubhead “Christianity” – regarding the last line of the first paragraph: “Christians feel that when people accept Jesus as their savior, they will achieve eternal life.”
The Christian faith is a belief not a feeling, and across the Christian spectrum, it is believed that eternal life is received by God’s grace; it is not an achievement accomplished by the individual.
Recommended changes: replace “Christians feel” with the more accurate “Christians believe” and replace “they will achieve eternal life” with the more accurate “they will receive eternal life.”
